Local Blood Supply Drops to Critical 1–2-Day Supply
SunCoast Blood Centers Urgently Calls for Blood and Platelet Donors Across Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte, and DeSoto Counties
SunCoast Blood Centers is calling on residents across Southwest Florida to donate blood and platelets after the region’s blood supply dropped to critically low levels during the summer months.
The organization reported that its daily inventory has fallen from approximately 1,200 units to about 650 units, representing a 46% decrease. Current supplies are estimated to be sufficient for only one to two days, well below the preferred three- to four-day inventory needed to support local hospitals and respond to emergencies.
Blood and platelet donations are especially needed as schools are out for summer, families travel, and holiday weekends reduce donor participation. At the same time, hospitals continue to rely on a steady supply of blood products for surgeries, cancer treatments, trauma care, and other lifesaving medical procedures.
SunCoast Blood Centers is seeking hundreds of additional donations to help rebuild the blood supply and ensure hospitals throughout the region have the resources they need. Officials emphasize that continued donor participation will be necessary throughout the summer to maintain safe inventory levels.
Eligible donors are encouraged to visit any SunCoast Blood Centers donor center or blood mobile serving Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte, and DeSoto counties. Appointments can be scheduled online, and walk-in donors are also welcome.
As a thank-you, blood donors will receive a $30 instant e-gift card, while platelet donors can receive up to a $70 instant e-gift card.
Residents interested in donating can schedule an appointment through the SunCoast Blood Centers website and are encouraged to give now to help strengthen the local blood supply during a critical time of need.
