Longboat Key Launches Nationwide Search for New Police Chief
The Town of Longboat Key has officially opened the search for its next police chief, aiming to have a new leader by mid-June. Interim Chief Frank Rubino has temporarily held the position since the departure of former Chief George Turner in January.
Town Manager Howard Tipton confirmed the hiring process is underway, with approximately 43 applications received as of May 1. The pool of candidates includes both internal and external applicants. The goal is to finalize the selection before the town commission adjourns for its summer recess.
Previously, Rubino, the department’s deputy chief, was credited with ensuring stable and professional operations during the interim period. Tipton said the transition allowed for internal conversations with department staff to gather input on what qualities the next chief should bring to the role.
The department’s top priorities is finding a “working manager”—an equally capable leader in administrative functions and community-facing duties. The future chief will be expected to uphold and strengthen the department’s commitment to community policing, maintain professional standards, and continue progress toward organizational excellence.
The department, which has long prioritized building strong connections with residents and local groups, is seeking a chief who values transparency, accessibility, and active involvement in the community.
Former Chief George Turner served in Longboat Key law enforcement from 2001 to 2007, returning in 2021 to lead the department. His resignation followed a December 2024 staff announcement that noted a planned shift in the department’s direction under Tipton’s administration.
The town expects to complete its review and interviews in the coming weeks, and the chosen candidate will be introduced publicly before the start of summer.
