Lt. Perry’s Place Offers Sanctuary for First Responders in Manatee County
First responders now have a dedicated space to decompress and heal thanks to Lt. Perry’s Place, a 24/7 support facility founded in memory of Manatee County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Joseph Perry. Operated by the nonprofit Joe Perry Lives, Inc., the center provides a judgment-free space for law enforcement officers, firefighters, and other first responders to gather, relax, and access vital resources, particularly during overnight hours when other support options may not be available.
Located at 2428 Manatee Avenue East in Bradenton, Lt. Perry’s Place is open every day of the year. Its mission is rooted in the legacy of Lt. Joseph Perry, a respected law enforcement officer who passed away in 2015. A plaque within the facility, signed by Sheriff Rick Wells, honors Perry’s commitment to service and his enduring impact on the first responder community.
The facility features a range of amenities designed to foster connection, recovery, and emotional well-being. Guests have access to cardio equipment, a pool table, TVs with PS5 consoles, and a kitchenette. Free counseling services are available on-site, and the space is equipped with cable, Wi-Fi, and areas for relaxation and unwinding. Lt. Perry’s Place has been described as “a place to breathe” for those who serve under high stress and emotional strain.
The idea for Lt. Perry’s Place came from a growing recognition of the mental health crisis within the first responder community. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), first responders face elevated rates of depression, PTSD, and suicide risk due to the high-pressure nature of their jobs. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) also reports that nearly 1 in 4 police officers have experienced suicidal thoughts at some point in their careers.
Lt. Perry’s Place is a direct response to those realities, aiming to create a culture of support and healing. It is funded entirely through donations and community support. Those wishing to contribute can donate online at joeperrylives.org or by scanning the QR code featured in promotional materials.
For more information or to get involved, contact the organization at 833-587-3779 or text 727-313-8189. Lt. Perry’s Place stands as a beacon of compassion, reminding the community that even heroes need a place to rest, recover, and feel understood.
