Manatee County Accelerates Major Roadway Projects to Enhance Transportation as 2024 Closes
As 2024 concludes, Manatee County is actively advancing several significant roadway projects to enhance transportation infrastructure and alleviate traffic congestion. Key initiatives include:
Fort Hamer Road and Bridge Widening
On December 4, 2024, Manatee County held a public hearing to present plans for widening Fort Hamer Road from Upper Manatee River Road to U.S. 301. The $190.5 million project entails expanding the road to four lanes and constructing a parallel span to the existing Fort Hamer Bridge. Construction is slated to begin in 2028.
Upper Manatee River Road Improvement
Construction commenced on August 5, 2024, to widen Upper Manatee River Road from State Road 64 to the Fort Hamer Bridge. The project aims to expand the roadway to four lanes, with an anticipated completion in fall 2027.
44th Avenue East Extension
The final phase of the 44th Avenue East extension is underway, focusing on constructing an overpass over Interstate 75. This extension is designed to provide an additional east-west corridor, easing traffic on parallel routes such as State Roads 64 and 70.
State Road 70 Widening
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is progressing with the widening of State Road 70 between Lorraine Road and County Road 675. The project includes expanding the road to four lanes and installing multiple roundabouts to improve traffic flow and safety. Construction is divided into two phases, with the first phase from Lorraine Road to Bourneside Boulevard nearing design completion and construction anticipated to begin in early 2024.
State Road 64 at Lorraine Road and 145th Street East Roundabout
FDOT has initiated the conversion of the traffic signal at State Road 64 and Lorraine Road/145th Street East into a free-flowing roundabout. This project aims to enhance traffic efficiency and safety at the intersection.
These projects reflect Manatee County's commitment to improving its transportation network to accommodate growth and enhance mobility for residents and visitors.
