Manatee County Acquires Seafood Shack Property for Public Boat Ramp Project
Manatee County has officially purchased the historic Seafood Shack and Marina property in Cortez with plans to develop new public boat ramp amenities on the waterfront. The $13 million purchase, approved by county commissioners in September, was finalized on New Year's Eve.
During a public meeting, commissioners directed staff to design a development plan for public boat ramps and other facilities to enhance public access to local waterways. District 3 Commissioner Tal Siddique advocated for public fishing access, the site's integration into the Gulf Islands Ferry Service, and cooperation with existing businesses on the property.
Long-term transportation goals for the area include a ferry service between Cortez and Bridge Street to reduce road traffic and provide non-boating residents access to the ramp. Siddique emphasized preserving Cortez’s fishing heritage by ensuring space for recreational fishing on the property.
Commission Chairman George Kruse highlighted the importance of supporting local businesses like Annie's Bait & Tackle, a historic staple since 1955, ensuring their continuity as part of the development. The county's next steps include demolishing old structures, repairing piers and docks, and clearing capsized boats from the site.
