Manatee County Approves Funding for Shoreline and Reef Projects on South Anna Maria Island
The Manatee County Board of County Commissioners has unanimously approved using state funding for a series of shoreline and reef enhancement projects aimed at protecting and revitalizing the south end of Anna Maria Island.
In a 7-0 vote on March 25, the commission directed funds from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) toward beach erosion control and creating artificial reefs off Coquina Beach.
The project package includes:
- Construction of nearshore breakwaters at Coquina Beach
- Development of a 2-acre mitigation boulder reef
- Creation of a limestone snorkel reef for recreational use
- Rehabilitation of the Longboat Pass jetty
The artificial reef initiative, which includes $60,000 from the FWC, is designed to support marine ecosystems by providing habitats for aquatic species and enhancing recreational diving and snorkeling opportunities. These reefs play a vital role in long-term environmental sustainability and marine biodiversity.
In addition, the commission allocated $375,000 in DEP funds to address ongoing erosion at Coquina Beach. This portion of the project involves removing decaying concrete groins and installing four offshore breakwaters to reduce wave action and protect the beach from further degradation.
The rehabilitation of the Longboat Pass jetty will include the construction of a sheet pile retaining wall to reinforce the structure and prevent sand loss. Crews will also reconstruct the seaward end of the jetty with limestone boulders to restore damage sustained during last fall’s storms.
Hurricanes Helene and Milton significantly impacted the area, with Helene causing heavy flooding and erosion along the Bradenton Beach shoreline. The projects aim to stabilize vulnerable coastal areas and reduce the risk of future storm damage.
Although the commission’s vote secures the initial funding and approval, timelines and detailed budget allocations for each component are still in development. The projects are part of the county’s capital improvement plan, with further planning to continue as additional funding becomes available.
