Manatee County Beach Patrol Reminds Visitors to Check Warning Flags Before Swimming
As residents and visitors head to Manatee County’s beaches, Beach Patrol officials are reminding everyone to pay close attention to the warning flags posted at lifeguard towers before entering the water.
The beach warning flag system is designed to quickly communicate current water conditions and potential hazards, helping beachgoers make informed decisions about swimming.
The color-coded system includes:
Double Red Flags: Water is closed to the public, and entering the water is prohibited.
Single Red Flag: High hazard conditions with dangerous surf and strong currents.
Yellow Flag: Medium hazard with moderate surf and currents. Swimmers should use caution.
Green Flag: Low hazard with calm conditions, though swimmers should always remain alert.
Purple Flag: Dangerous marine life has been spotted in the area, such as jellyfish or stingrays.
Beach Patrol also encourages visitors to swim only near staffed lifeguard towers whenever possible, as lifeguards provide the quickest response in the event of an emergency.
Before leaving for the beach, swimmers are encouraged to check the latest beach conditions online to stay informed about current hazards and flag warnings. Even when conditions appear calm, officials remind visitors that surf and weather conditions can change rapidly, making it important to stay aware and follow posted safety advisories.
