Manatee County Beaches Add Lightning Detection Systems to Protect Visitors
Beachgoers in Manatee County now have an added layer of safety as new lightning detection systems are being installed at two of the area’s most popular destinations. Thor Guard Lightning Prediction Systems are currently in operation at Manatee Public Beach and will be activated at Coquina Beach starting next week.
The systems operate daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and are designed to alert visitors when lightning is nearby. One long horn blast signals that lightning has been detected within range, and it’s time to seek shelter. Three short blasts indicate that conditions have cleared and it is safe to return.
Thor Guard’s technology works by monitoring static electricity in the atmosphere and ground. When atmospheric charges reach a threshold indicating a high probability of a strike, the system sounds a 15-second horn blast and activates a strobe light, providing approximately 15 to 20 minutes of warning before lightning is expected within a two-mile radius.
Manatee County officials say the investment is about saving lives. Chet Brown, division chief for Beach Patrol and Aquatic Safety, emphasized that the technology will provide valuable protection not only at the beaches but also at county pools and splash pads.
With Florida leading the nation in lightning strikes, officials hope the new technology will give visitors the confidence to enjoy the water while staying safe when storms approach.
