Manatee County Bookmobile Set to Bring Library Services Directly to Residents
Manatee County is preparing to take library services on the road with a new bookmobile expected to begin serving residents later this year.
The county’s first new bookmobile in decades is nearing completion and is expected to arrive by the end of October. The mobile library will bring books, technology, programs and other services directly into neighborhoods, expanding access for residents who may have difficulty visiting one of Manatee County’s traditional library branches.
The bookmobile is expected to be particularly beneficial for residents who live farther from a library, along with seniors, assisted living residents and others who face transportation or mobility challenges.
Approximately 2,500 items can be carried aboard the bookmobile at one time, with library staff able to draw from a much larger collection and rotate materials based on the neighborhoods, facilities and groups scheduled for upcoming visits.
In addition to books and other library materials, the mobile library will include Wi-Fi, technology and workspaces. A wheelchair lift will make the vehicle ADA accessible.
Library officials are also planning storytimes, technology assistance, special events and other outreach programs that can be offered during stops throughout the county.
The bookmobile could take on an additional role during emergencies. Its internet access, charging stations and workspace could provide residents with important resources when normal services are disrupted.
Although the new vehicle will feature modern technology and services, bookmobiles have a long history in Manatee County.
The county’s original bookmobile began operating in 1964, traveling throughout Manatee County on a rotating schedule and bringing books directly to local communities. Librarian Vera Neff drove and operated the mobile library, becoming a familiar sight for residents waiting for the bookmobile to arrive in their neighborhoods.
For longtime residents who remember those visits, the new bookmobile will revive a piece of Manatee County history while introducing the service to a new generation.
This time, however, the traditional shelves of books will be joined by wireless internet, technology services and programming designed around the needs of today’s communities.
Once the new bookmobile arrives, Manatee County plans to introduce it through community appearances before establishing a regular schedule of stops throughout the county.
