Manatee County Commission Chair Outlines Priorities and Calls for Unity in 2026
The first Manatee County Commission meeting of 2026 opened with a State of the Chair address, continuing a board tradition introduced last year by the previous chair.
Commissioner Tal Siddique, who was appointed chairman last month, formally assumed the role on Jan. 1, following the transition from former chair George Kruse.
In his opening remarks on Tuesday, Siddique acknowledged that 2026 is an election year and emphasized the importance of maintaining professionalism and mutual respect among commissioners despite anticipated political pressures. He expressed a desire for the board to work collaboratively throughout the year and extended well wishes to fellow commissioners and their families as the election season approaches.
Three seats on the Manatee County Board of County Commissioners are up for election or reelection this year. At this point, only two commissioners have officially or informally indicated plans to seek another term.
Looking back on the past year, Siddique highlighted several program successes and outlined priorities he believes should guide the board in 2026. These include adopting an updated comprehensive plan, advancing economic development efforts, strengthening local decision-making authority, improving the county’s budget process, and exploring options for property tax relief for residents.
As part of efforts to enhance local governance, Siddique suggested that the commission examine the potential benefits, challenges, and procedural steps involved in becoming a charter county. He noted a broader trend of state-level preemption of local authority and said charter status could offer expanded home-rule powers by providing greater local flexibility, with major changes subject to public input and voter approval.
Siddique also pointed to Florida’s recall provisions, which allow voters in charter counties to remove elected officials through a petition process, as an additional consideration in evaluating whether charter status could benefit Manatee County.
The discussion set the tone for the year ahead, framing both the policy priorities and governance questions likely to shape commission deliberations in 2026.

Maybe as a charter county we can recall the commissioners who were swindled into buying the new admin building. Good luck hiring.
