Manatee County Commissioners to Consider Beach Renourishment Funding, Project Grace Sports Complex and Environmental Lands Referendum
The Manatee County Board of County Commissioners will meet Tuesday, June 16, with a wide-ranging agenda that includes major infrastructure projects, beach renourishment funding, housing recovery updates, environmental land conservation initiatives and economic development proposals.
Among the most significant items scheduled for discussion is a proposal to authorize an estimated $6.18 million prepayment to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for additional beach renourishment work associated with the Anna Maria Island and Manatee County Shore Protection projects. Commissioners will also consider a cooperative agreement with the Department of the Army related to the county’s ongoing shoreline protection efforts.
Economic development discussions will include proposed business terms for the Indoor Sports Multiplex, also known as Project Grace, a major recreational and tourism-related development planned for eastern Manatee County. The board will also review progress updates on the county’s HUD Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery housing program and the Lasting Manatee initiative.
Several community and human services funding items are scheduled for approval through the consent agenda. These include acceptance of a $305,750 grant from the Bishop-Parker Foundation for the CARE Program Community Animal Resource and Enhancement initiative, along with funding agreements for elderly care programs, Alzheimer’s services, emergency home energy assistance and home-delivered meal programs.
Commissioners will also consider accepting more than $1.17 million in state and local funding for the Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative program serving Manatee County residents through September 2027.
Public safety items include approval to receive a $25,000 donation from the Rotary Club of Anna Maria Island for the purchase of a BRINC Responder Safeguard drone for Beach Patrol and Aquatic Safety operations, as well as agreements with the U.S. Coast Guard and IMG Academy related to emergency management and disaster response planning.
Infrastructure and utility projects also feature prominently on the agenda. Commissioners are expected to review contracts and budget amendments related to road improvements, sewer expansion projects in Parrish, upgrades at the Southwest Water Reclamation Facility, water main replacements and continued development of the Premier Campus Racquet and Aquatic Complex.
Environmental conservation will be another major topic. The board will discuss authorizing staff to work with The Trust for Public Land and the County Attorney’s Office to prepare potential ballot language and a funding strategy for expanded environmental land acquisition and preservation efforts.
Additional agenda items include appointments to the Tourist Development Council and Value Adjustment Board, quarterly strategic plan updates, recognition of the Manatee County Task Force, a status report on the Light Up Manatee initiative and discussion of a potential short-term vacation rental ordinance tailored specifically for Manatee County.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at the Manatee County Administration Building and is open to the public. Citizens will have opportunities to provide comments both on consent agenda items and future county business during designated public comment periods.
