Manatee County corrections deputy arrested
A Manatee County corrections deputy was arrested in Sarasota on Tuesday in connection to an argument at Ackerman Park last month, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies reported that Benjamin Sampey, 21, was involved in an altercation at the park on June 21, during which he allegedly brandished his agency-issued handgun and pointed it at another man's head. Sampey claimed he acted in self-defense while trying to break up a fight, but his account was contradicted by witness statements.
“This is not acceptable behavior for any employee of the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office and will not be tolerated,” stated Sheriff Rick Wells. “I commend the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office for taking swift action on this case.”
Following his arrest, Sampey resigned from his position. He had been employed by the sheriff’s office since 2023. Sampey has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, without intent to kill.
