Manatee County Enforces Watering Restrictions Following Multiple Violations
Manatee County is reinforcing its year-round watering restrictions after issuing 11 citations to residents who failed to comply with local irrigation rules.
The recent enforcement action highlights ongoing efforts by county officials to ensure water conservation measures are followed, particularly during periods of limited rainfall. Authorities say most residents comply with the rules, but violations continue to occur, prompting increased monitoring and enforcement.
Under guidelines established by the Southwest Florida Water Management District and enforced locally by Manatee County Government, residential irrigation is limited to once per week based on address. Homes are assigned a specific weekday depending on the last digit of the address, while businesses and common areas, such as homeowners’ associations, are allowed to irrigate on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Watering is only permitted before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. to reduce evaporation and improve efficiency. Weekend watering is generally prohibited, except for limited uses such as handheld hoses or certain irrigation systems. The rules also require functioning rain or soil moisture sensors on automatic systems and prohibit overwatering that leads to runoff into streets, sidewalks, or neighboring properties.
Additional allowances are made for newly installed landscaping, which may be watered more frequently during an initial establishment period under specific conditions.
County officials emphasize that the restrictions are intended to protect water resources, maintain system efficiency, and support long-term sustainability. Violations can result in warnings or fines, and repeat offenses may lead to increased penalties.
Residents are encouraged to review their assigned watering day and ensure irrigation systems are properly set to remain in compliance as enforcement efforts continue.
