Manatee County Honored by NOAA for River Restoration and Conservation Efforts
Manatee County has received national recognition from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for its commitment to environmental restoration and sustainable public access along the Manatee River. The acknowledgment highlights the County’s multifaceted efforts to restore wetlands, improve water quality, and create new recreational opportunities—all while preserving a rare stretch of undeveloped coastal habitat in one of Florida’s fastest-growing regions.
Central to the initiative is the acquisition of 68 acres known as the Crooked River Preserve, which was funded in part by a $5 million grant from NOAA through the National Coastal Zone Management Program. Once a private retreat and cattle ranch, the property will soon be transformed into a public preserve featuring kayak launches, biking and hiking trails, restrooms, and an observation platform.
The Crooked River Preserve is situated within the Manatee River Conservation Corridor and is home to manatees, alligators, and numerous vital fish species. County officials say the preserve will also play a crucial role in enhancing storm resilience, providing natural protection for nearby communities by enhancing tidal creeks, restoring wetlands, and supporting native habitats.
As development accelerates throughout Manatee County, the preservation of this large tract of natural space marks a significant step toward balancing growth with ecological responsibility. In addition to safeguarding wildlife and improving the region’s water systems, the project expands outdoor access for residents and visitors alike, bringing new opportunities for eco-tourism, recreation, and environmental education.
The NOAA-backed investment has enabled the County to conserve the property while freeing up resources for future land acquisitions along the Manatee River. Officials plan to continue expanding the corridor, linking critical habitats and public lands in a network that supports both environmental health and community well-being.
