The Manatee Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) has approved a partnership with State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) designed to expand access to professional training and higher education while strengthening the local workforce.
Through the Suncoast Prosper Scholarship Fund, Manatee County will invest up to $7.5 million over three years to provide “last-dollar” financial assistance to eligible students pursuing associate degrees and certificate programs at SCF. The program is expected to support approximately 1,425 students.
“This is an investment in our students and in the future of Manatee County,” said BOCC Chair and District 3 Commissioner Tal Siddique. “This program supports the county’s high‑demand industries by connecting technical education and skills development with clear pathways to registered apprenticeships and good‑paying careers - strengthening the local talent pipeline and aligning training with real workforce needs.”
Eligible participants include 2027 and 2028 graduates of Manatee County public, charter, alternative and private schools, as well as home education programs, who meet program requirements and reside within Manatee County.
Beginning in Fall 2027, the program will help cover eligible tuition and required costs remaining after other grants and scholarships have been applied. SCF will also provide participants with college and career advising, financial-aid assistance and other student support services.
The partnership is designed to increase educational opportunities while developing a skilled local workforce and advancing economic mobility within the region.

Johnson Helm House: The Board approved a local historic landmark designation for the Johnson Helm House in Oneco. Built between 1906 and 1908, the home is an example of Romanesque Revival architecture and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2009.
Coquina Beach Restoration: Commissioners approved a $1.92 million FEMA storm damage repair project agreement for Hurricane Idalia repairs at Coquina Beach, including beach nourishment, grading and site restoration. The federally supported project has a 90-day construction schedule following the Notice to Proceed.
Manatee River Oyster Restoration: The Board approved a nearly $1.89 million federally funded project to install up to 23 oyster reef modules as part of two oyster habitat restoration projects in the Manatee River. The two projects are funded entirely by grants and donations, including RESTORE funds, an FDEP appropriation, and the Tampa Bay Environmental Restoration Fund, as well as a $100K donation from the City of Bradenton.
Board Votes Against License Plate Readers at County Facilities: The Board voted 5-0 not to approve the installation of Flock license plate readers at County facilities, parks or buildings. The discussion followed concerns raised by constituents regarding privacy, data retention, data sharing, long-term costs and balancing public safety with individual privacy. The motion was made by Commissioner Ballard and seconded by Commissioner Siddique.
