Manatee County Moves Forward with Juvenile Curfew
The Manatee County Commission has approved the creation of a juvenile curfew ordinance aimed at reducing late-night youth crime and increasing community safety. The directive, approved in a 6-1 vote on Tuesday, instructs the county attorney to draft the ordinance for formal adoption. Chair George Kruse cast the lone dissenting vote.
The ordinance will prohibit anyone under the age of 17 from being in a public place in Manatee County between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and from midnight to 5 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
Several exceptions will be included, such as minors traveling to or from lawful employment, attending or returning from school or church activities, or responding to emergencies involving the protection of family members or property. Minors accompanied by a parent or legal guardian will also be exempt.
The curfew is being implemented in response to an increase in juvenile-related crimes during late-night hours, including theft, vandalism, and car break-ins, particularly in District 2. Law enforcement officials have reported that many of these incidents occur when minors are unsupervised, prompting the county to take what officials describe as a proactive approach to prevention and intervention.
Penalties for violating the curfew will escalate with each offense. The first violation will result in a written warning and notification to the minor’s parent or guardian. A second offense may require participation in a diversion program or carry a civil fine of up to $50. A third offense could lead to a fine of up to $100 and possible referral to juvenile court or social services.
County officials emphasized that the primary goal is education and early intervention, aiming to connect families to services when needed and set clear boundaries for youth behavior during nighttime hours.
The county attorney is expected to present the drafted ordinance for final approval in an upcoming commission meeting.
