Manatee County is reminding motorists that designated bicycle lanes must remain clear as drivers navigate school zones, neighborhoods and other areas where children, cyclists and pedestrians may be present.
Under Florida Statute 316.1945(1)(b)(6), parking or stopping a vehicle in a designated bicycle lane is prohibited. County officials are asking drivers to be especially mindful near schools and bus stops, where improperly parked vehicles can create additional hazards for children traveling by bicycle or on foot.
The county is also reminding motorists to slow down in designated school zones and pay close attention to posted speed limits. Drivers should reduce their speed to 20 mph or less where required and remain alert for children who may make sudden or unexpected movements while riding bicycles.
Motorists dropping off or picking up students should use only authorized areas and avoid blocking neighborhood or community entrances. Bicycle lanes should never be used as temporary parking or waiting areas during school arrival and dismissal.
Drivers are also reminded that school zones are hands-free areas. Florida law restricts the use of handheld wireless devices while operating a vehicle in a designated school crossing, school zone or active work zone.
School crossing guards should also be given drivers’ full attention. Motorists must follow their directions, which may include stopping where there is no stop sign or yielding the right-of-way so children can safely cross the roadway.
The county’s message emphasizes that extra caution around schools, bus stops, parking lots and residential areas can help protect children and other vulnerable road users.
