Manatee County Search & Rescue Team Responds to Hurricane Helene, Rescues Multiple Individuals and Animals Amidst Devastating Conditions
On September 26th, 2024, the Manatee County Search & Rescue (MCSAR) team was deployed by request of the Holmes Beach Police Department (HBPD) to assist with emergency operations in response to Hurricane Helene. The team, consisting of 10 skilled members including Emergency Medical Technicians, Paramedics, and Rescue Swimmers trained in floodwater response, played a crucial role in providing aid during the unprecedented storm.
Over a span of more than 24 hours, MCSAR members worked tirelessly alongside local agencies to conduct multiple rescue operations. In total, four adults, two children, and two dogs were rescued from the dangerous conditions that accompanied the hurricane. One of the most harrowing rescues involved a resident and her dog who were trapped inside a house engulfed by flames. The severity of the storm surge and high-speed winds had made it impossible for other emergency responders to reach the area, but MCSAR was able to intervene and bring the woman and her dog to safety. After being trapped for over 30 minutes, the woman required immediate medical attention and oxygen for suspected smoke inhalation.
The MCSAR team’s efforts, alongside the coordinated response from the Holmes Beach Police Department, Manatee County Sheriff's Office, and Bradenton Beach Police Department, were critical during this period of emergency. West Manatee Fire Rescue played an essential role by receiving the rescued individuals and the patient requiring medical attention at their station, allowing MCSAR to continue lifesaving operations.
The community extends heartfelt gratitude to all agencies involved in the rescue efforts, particularly to the medical professionals overseeing MCSAR’s emergency care during such austere conditions. Their unwavering commitment in the face of Hurricane Helene reflects the strength and dedication of Manatee County’s first responders.
