Manatee County Warns Residents as Copper Wire Thefts Target Street Lighting Systems
Manatee County officials are alerting residents to a growing problem impacting public safety and taxpayer resources: repeated copper wire thefts from street lighting systems across the county.
According to Manatee County Traffic Operations, the county has experienced multiple incidents in recent weeks, particularly in eastern areas including Lakewood Ranch, the new section of Moccasin Wallow Road, and along 44th Avenue East. Thieves have reportedly stolen thousands of feet of copper wire at a time, leaving critical infrastructure damaged and requiring costly repairs.
Copper wire theft is a multi-million-dollar issue nationwide, and local officials say Manatee County is not immune. Each theft can result in tens of thousands of dollars in repair expenses, diverting public funds away from planned improvements and routine maintenance projects. Beyond the financial burden, the thefts create potential safety hazards by disabling street lighting in high-traffic areas.
County officials are working closely with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the crimes. In response, cameras have been strategically installed in affected areas, and additional safeguards are being implemented to deter future incidents.
Residents are being asked to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, particularly individuals working around street lights at night. Officials note that routine street lighting maintenance is typically performed during daytime hours, with few exceptions, such as emergency repairs following traffic crashes.
County leaders emphasize that copper wire theft is not a victimless offense. The crimes delay critical infrastructure repairs, compromise public safety, and place a financial strain on the community. Authorities have made clear that those responsible will be pursued and prosecuted.
