Manatee School for the Arts was placed on lockdown on Tuesday after a student allegedly posted a threatening comment on social media, according to school officials.
Principal Dr. Steve Marshall said the lockdown was initiated as a precaution while authorities investigated the reported threat. Students alerted school officials to the social media activity, prompting a response from administrators and law enforcement.
The student suspected of making the threat was located on campus, taken into custody by local law enforcement and removed from campus.
School officials said additional information about the student and the investigation could not be released because of state and federal student privacy protections and laws governing juvenile records.
Following the incident, the school encouraged families to discuss the seriousness of making threats on social media and reminded students to report concerning behavior. During campus emergencies, families are asked to monitor official school communications and keep roads near the school clear for first responders.
The school did not release additional information about the nature of the alleged threat or whether the student will face criminal charges.
