National Water Safety Month Highlights Local Swim Scholarships and Safety Resources
May is recognized as National Water Safety Month, bringing attention to drowning prevention and the importance of water safety education, particularly in communities where water activities are a regular part of life.
Leading local efforts this year, Big Dreams Through Small Steps is launching the second year of its swim scholarship program through the AQUAlibrium initiative. The program is designed to provide children with access to swim lessons, helping them build confidence and develop critical life-saving skills. The initiative is offered in partnership with Step Into Swim, a national organization focused on expanding access to swim education and reducing drowning rates.
The scholarship program aims to remove financial barriers for families and increase the number of children who have the opportunity to learn essential water safety skills. Community-based programs like AQUAlibrium play a key role in prevention by combining education with accessibility.
In addition to nonprofit-led initiatives, safety resources are also available through Manatee County Government. The county offers a limited number of free safety devices, including pool alarms as well as door and window alarms, to help create additional layers of protection for homes with young children. These tools are intended to alert caregivers if a child enters an area that could pose a risk.
Water safety experts emphasize that prevention works best when multiple strategies are used together, including constant supervision, physical barriers such as fences and alarms, and early swim instruction. Drowning remains a leading cause of accidental death for young children, making awareness and access to resources especially important.
As National Water Safety Month continues, local organizations and agencies are encouraging families to take proactive steps to protect children around water, whether through swim lessons, home safety measures, or increased awareness, reinforcing a shared commitment to keeping the community safe.
