New Sticker Program Helps Manatee County Deputies Respond With Care
A new initiative from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office aims to give first responders a vital tip before they step into potentially sensitive situations. The Respond With Care sticker program uses a brightly colored decal to alert deputies, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel that someone at a home or in a vehicle may have special needs that require extra understanding and patience.
The stickers are designed to be posted near a front door or on the rear window of a car so they are easily seen when responders arrive. They signal that an occupant might be hard of hearing, visually impaired, have cognitive challenges, or exhibit behaviors that could be misinterpreted in high-stress moments. With that heads-up, deputies can take a moment to collect more information, adjust their approach, and reduce the chances of unnecessary escalation.
Captain Mark Morie of the Child Protection Investigation Division said the stickers do more than just mark a home. They prompt officers to exercise “careful response” and thoughtful interaction before rushing into action. The voluntary program builds on ongoing de-escalation training and provides an additional tool that benefits both residents and first responders.
The decals are available at any Manatee County Sheriff’s Office district location at no cost to families who feel they could benefit from the added visibility. The sheriff’s office also promotes related programs, including Take Me Home, which helps deputies quickly reunite individuals with cognitive needs who wander or go missing.
Local advocates say the program reflects a growing focus on inclusive community policing strategies that prioritize communication and safety for all residents. manateesheriff.com
