New Underwater Pipeline Approved to Restore Anna Maria Island Water Main
A long-term solution to a critical infrastructure issue for Anna Maria Island is moving forward, as county commissioners approved a $4.17 million construction agreement for a new subaqueous water main beneath the Intracoastal Waterway.
On May 20, the Manatee County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved the contract with D.B.E. Management LLC of Loxahatchee. The project will replace the temporary water main installed in 2023, following the collapse of a section of the original 16-inch line, built in 1982, into the Anna Maria Sound. The failure occurred after the supports holding the pipeline to the Anna Maria Island Bridge gave way.
In response, the county quickly constructed a temporary pipeline along the south side of the bridge, restoring water service to the island in less than a month. However, that temporary line currently occupies part of the bridge's southern sidewalk, limiting pedestrian access.
Construction on the permanent underwater pipeline is expected to begin in the coming months and continue through late 2026. While the majority of work will occur below the surface, county officials have advised that minor traffic impacts on Manatee Avenue should be anticipated, including lane shifts and periodic delays due to equipment deliveries.
Once the new water main is completed and passes final testing, the county will transition water service from the current temporary line to the new system. That switchover will occur at night to minimize service disruptions and will be followed by the removal of the bridge-mounted pipeline.
County officials say the subaqueous pipeline will provide a more durable, resilient water connection to Anna Maria Island, ensuring the long-term reliability of the region’s utility infrastructure.
