Ocean Safety Expert Encourages Beachgoers to Build “Blue IQ” Ahead of Spring Break
As spring break approaches and more visitors head to beaches across Florida and the Gulf Coast, ocean safety experts are encouraging beachgoers to strengthen their knowledge of ocean conditions before entering the water.
Brucker Chase of the Ocean Positive Foundation is helping promote a national effort to improve public awareness through the “Blue IQ” series produced by NOAA’s Ocean Today. The program provides educational videos and resources designed to help people better understand ocean hazards, beach conditions, and how to stay safe in coastal environments.
The Blue IQ series highlights practical information, including how to recognize rip currents, understand wave patterns, interpret beach warning flags, and respond appropriately in dangerous situations. The educational materials aim to equip swimmers, surfers, boaters, and beach visitors with the knowledge needed to make safer decisions while enjoying the ocean.
Ocean safety advocates say increasing “Blue IQ” can reduce preventable accidents and improve confidence for people visiting the coast during busy travel seasons like spring break. With beaches expecting larger crowds in the coming weeks, officials emphasize that understanding ocean conditions and respecting the power of the water are critical steps in preventing injuries and drownings.
The full Blue IQ video series and ocean safety resources are available online through NOAA’s Ocean Today platform. The materials are designed for viewers of all ages and can be used by families, educators, and community groups to promote safer beach experiences.
