Operator Error Causes Wastewater Treatment Violation in Bradenton
A chlorine disinfection violation occurred at a Bradenton wastewater treatment facility on November 21, 2024, following an operator error, according to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
The incident took place during a period of high chlorine demand caused by backwash from 6:28 p.m. to 9:38 p.m. Officials reported that an operator's incorrect response led to a drop in residual chlorine levels below acceptable limits in one of the plant's chambers, resulting in incomplete wastewater treatment.
Approximately 525,000 gallons of partially treated wastewater passed through the system before the issue was identified. The error was corrected when an incoming operator noticed the problem and restored the chlorine levels by adding bleach to the affected chamber.
In response to the violation, the city of Bradenton is implementing additional on-the-job training to ensure operators are adequately prepared to handle similar situations in the future. The DEP continues to monitor the facility to ensure compliance.
