Overnight Camper Fire in Palmetto Leaves One Dead
A person died overnight in Palmetto while attempting to stop a fire at a camper, according to investigators.
The fire was reported just before 1 a.m. near 39th Street East in Palmetto. Crews with the North River Fire District responded expecting to battle a vegetation fire and were initially unaware the blaze involved a residential camper.
Investigators said the victim’s sister told firefighters the man was last seen walking toward the flames carrying a garden hose in an attempt to put the fire out.
Emergency crews later discovered the victim deceased at the scene.
Officials said the fire appears to have been accidental, and investigators found no evidence of foul play or malicious activity. The exact cause of the fire remains undetermined, though investigators said possible causes could include an electrical issue or debris that ignited and spread.
The victim’s body was transported to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy as the investigation continues.
