Palmetto Commission Approves Juvenile Curfew in 4-1 Vote After Heated Public Input
The Palmetto City Commission voted 4-1 Monday night to approve a juvenile curfew ordinance following passionate public comment from residents both within the city and neighboring communities.
The ordinance, proposed by the Palmetto Police Department, prohibits anyone under 16 from being in public after 11 p.m. on weeknights without adult supervision. Commissioner Harold Smith cast the lone dissenting vote.
Commission chambers were filled with speakers from Palmetto as well as residents from Bradenton and other nearby cities. Many voiced concerns about how the ordinance could impact families and youth, while others supported the measure as a step toward improving public safety.
Palmetto Police Chief Scott Tyler said enforcement of the curfew would not result in criminal charges for minors. Instead, if a child is stopped under the ordinance, officers would contact a parent or guardian to pick up the child or transport the minor home.
City leaders said the curfew's goal is to enhance safety and ensure parents are aware of their children’s whereabouts during late-night hours. Supporters of the ordinance described it as a preventive measure designed to reduce risk and protect youth, while opponents urged continued community dialogue on long-term solutions to support families and young people.
