The Palmetto Youth Center and Taggart Family Foundation have announced plans to pursue a strategic combination aimed at strengthening youth programs, expanding community services and preserving the Palmetto Youth Center’s longstanding role in the community.
The boards of directors of both organizations unanimously approved moving forward with the proposed combination, according to an October 9, 2026, Letter of Intent. The agreement marks the beginning of a formal legal and organizational transition process.
The proposed partnership would bring together the Palmetto Youth Center’s established community relationships and history of serving local families with the Taggart Family Foundation’s programming, operational resources and community partnerships.
Charles Newsome, chairman of the Palmetto Youth Center Board of Directors, indicated that the decision followed careful consideration of the center’s future and the importance of maintaining its community legacy. The board sees the proposed combination as an opportunity to establish a sustainable foundation for growth while preserving the center’s significance to generations of Palmetto residents.
Under the proposed arrangement, the organizations plan to explore expanded programming in youth development, academic enrichment, workforce preparation, financial literacy, mentorship, leadership development, health and wellness, sports, recreation and family engagement. Cultural experiences and additional educational opportunities are also among the priorities identified.
The organizations will also evaluate the Palmetto Youth Center’s facilities, operational needs, potential capital improvements and long-term financial sustainability. Community partnerships and input from stakeholders are expected to play a role in shaping future plans.
Leadership from both organizations emphasized that the transition will involve continued collaboration and planning, with additional announcements expected as decisions are finalized regarding programming, facilities, organizational structure and the center’s future identity.
The Palmetto Youth Center was founded in 1957 by a group of African American community leaders who recognized the need for a positive, supportive environment for local children. Established during an era of racial segregation, the center has grown into a longstanding community institution focused on education, character development, athletics and youth mentorship.
Located at 501 17th Street West in Palmetto, the center has served generations of children through after-school care, summer programs, recreational sports and educational enrichment.
The Taggart Family Foundation is a newer nonprofit organization founded by Willie Taggart, a Palmetto native and longtime football coach whose career has included head coaching positions at the University of South Florida, Florida State University, the University of Oregon and Florida Atlantic University.
Established as a Florida nonprofit in December 2024, the foundation focuses on expanding opportunities for underserved youth through education, athletics, mentorship, workforce development and personal growth. Its programs include academic support, financial literacy, career exploration and youth sports.
The foundation has also developed local initiatives, including before- and after-school programming at Lincoln Memorial Middle School and the Palmetto Eagles youth football and cheerleading programs.
The proposed combination represents an opportunity to connect nearly seven decades of community service with additional resources and programming designed to meet the changing needs of Palmetto’s children and families.
The organizations have not yet announced a final transition date or specific changes to existing programs. Further information is expected as the legal process continues and community input is gathered.
