Two Parrish Community High School TV Production students will see their hurricane preparedness concept brought to life after winning Spectrum’s NextGen Storm Team creative challenge.
Students Emily Schappert and Kendall Bacon earned the top honor for their public service announcement concept, I’ve Got Us Covered, which focuses on helping families remain connected before, during and after a hurricane.
The competition required students to go beyond developing a basic idea for a commercial. Schappert and Bacon created a complete creative concept that included the central idea, key message, a narrative for a 30-second campaign, storyboard and visual direction.
Their work advanced through the competition and was ultimately selected as the winning concept.
As part of the award, Spectrum’s creative team will develop the students’ concept for use in a hurricane preparedness campaign, giving the Parrish Community High School students an opportunity to have their classroom work transformed into a professional public service message.
The project combines skills taught through television production with an important issue for Florida residents. Hurricane preparedness communications can play a critical role in reminding families to make plans for staying informed and connected when severe weather threatens.
Parrish Community High School celebrated Schappert and Bacon’s achievement, recognizing both students for developing the winning campaign and representing the school’s TV Production program.
The accomplishment also provides the students with a real-world look at the creative production process, from developing an initial concept and storyboard to seeing that idea move into professional production for a public-facing campaign.
