Patterson Foundation Partnership Expands Digital Access
A new collaboration between The Patterson Foundation and the School District of Manatee County marks a significant step toward expanding digital access for local students and families. The effort is part of The Patterson Foundation’s Digital Access for All initiative, which focuses on increasing the availability of reliable technology in the community.
Scott Hansen of the school district, known for his long-standing support of student technology needs, helped grow the initiative. Before the pandemic, he worked with Tech4Students to distribute between 1,000 and 2,000 devices annually to families without home access. After seeing a device drive announcement in The Patterson Foundation’s newsletter, Hansen contacted the organization to explore a broader partnership.
That connection resulted in immediate action. Recently, Foundation representatives Marla Smith and Beth Duda picked up 304 refurbished laptops prepared for community distribution. The devices will be delivered to the Sarasota Technology Users Group (STUG), which will oversee placement with families and individuals in need.
The effort reflects the growing momentum behind Digital Access for All. To date, the initiative has collected more than 600 devices, highlighting the community’s growing involvement in closing the digital divide.
Residents interested in donating devices, learning how to prepare their computers for donation, or becoming involved in the project may contact the Device Drive Project Lead, Marla Smith, at msmithtpf@gmail.com or 941-713-9724. Details about drop-off locations are available through The Patterson Foundation.
Organizers say the initiative demonstrates how community partnerships can accelerate progress toward digital equity across the region.
