Point Park University Exploring Downtown Bradenton Campus Partnership
Downtown Bradenton could eventually become home to a new university presence as Point Park University explores a potential partnership with the city, beginning with programs through its Conservatory of Performing Arts.
The Pittsburgh-based university and the City of Bradenton are examining opportunities to establish a future campus using existing historic buildings downtown. The concept could involve retrofitting current structures to accommodate university programs while preserving and making new use of downtown properties.
The proposal remains in the exploratory stages, and no final decisions have been made.
An economic study expected to be completed later this month will provide city officials with additional information about the potential impact and feasibility of bringing Point Park University to Bradenton. City leaders plan to hold a workshop following the release of the study to discuss possible next steps.
Point Park University’s Conservatory of Performing Arts offers programs in areas including theatre, dance, cinema and other performing arts disciplines. Beginning a Bradenton presence with the conservatory could complement the city’s existing arts and cultural institutions and potentially bring students, faculty and additional activity into the downtown area.
The partnership would also build on Bradenton’s longstanding connection with Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh Pirates have held spring training in Bradenton for decades, with LECOM Park serving as the team’s spring training home.
City officials are considering the university proposal as part of broader efforts to encourage growth beyond downtown redevelopment alone. Bradenton already has several cultural attractions in and around its urban core, including the Manatee Performing Arts Center, the Herrig ArtCenter and The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature.
The economic study and subsequent city workshop are expected to provide a clearer picture of whether the university concept could move forward and what would be required to establish a Point Park presence in Bradenton.
