Primo the Dog Safe After Adoption Concerns Prompt Shelter Review
Manatee County Animal Welfare is responding to public concern following the recent adoption of a dog named Primo, assuring the community that he is now safe and in the care of a loving family.
The shelter confirmed that Primo was originally adopted by an individual who met all required criteria, including presenting valid government-issued identification and complying with county adoption policies. However, concerns about the dog’s well-being soon surfaced, prompting a wave of community interest and advocacy.
Animal Welfare officials have since located Primo and confirmed his safety. He is currently with a family who has shown interest in offering him a permanent, nurturing home. The shelter has invited the family to return to the adoption center to finalize the process. This visit will allow staff to provide critical background information on Primo’s behavior and health, and to offer ongoing support and resources to ensure a smooth transition.
In response to the situation, Manatee County Animal Welfare has initiated an internal review of the adoption procedures used in Primo’s case. The department emphasizes its adherence to National Best Practices for animal placements and is working to verify that all protocols were correctly followed.
Shelter staff reaffirmed their commitment to every animal’s safety, health, and happiness, noting that the adoption program continues to evolve based on community input and best practice standards.
