Protestors Rally Outside Historic Courthouse on National Day of Action
Dozens gathered outside the Historic Manatee County Courthouse on Thursday to participate in a National Day of Action, voicing opposition to President Donald Trump’s policies while honoring the legacy of civil rights icon John Lewis.
Organized by Indivisible Manatee and the Manatee County Democratic Black Caucus, the rally marked five years since the death of Congressman Lewis, whose call to “make good trouble” became a central theme of the day’s events. Demonstrators cited concerns over voting rights, social programs, and civil liberties, which they say are being rolled back.
Local Democratic Black Caucus President Glenn Pearson addressed the crowd, pointing to what he sees as an erosion of key protections and services. He highlighted threats to voting access, human rights, and food security as reasons for continued public activism.
The Bradenton demonstration was part of a coordinated series of protests held nationwide, building on momentum from last month’s No Kings Day rallies, which coincided with Trump’s birthday.
Community leaders also joined the rally, including Rev. James T. Golden, a longtime local activist, and Tracy Washington, President of the NAACP Manasota Chapter. Speakers emphasized the importance of civic engagement and unity in the face of division.
The peaceful gathering highlighted residents’ participation in the political process and their support for causes related to voting rights and social justice.
