Salvation Army Expands Community Impact and Calls for Holiday Volunteers in Manatee County
As The Salvation Army of Manatee County celebrates more than a century of service, the organization continues to meet the growing needs of local residents through year-round programs and special holiday initiatives. Since its founding in 1923, the Salvation Army has provided essential services addressing food insecurity, housing, addiction recovery, and family stability to thousands of people across the region.
In 2024, the Manatee County branch provided 78,759 nights of shelter, served 72,194 meals, and assisted 194 families. The organization also supported 99 veterans and 2,871 single women and men in need. Its global network of shelters, youth camps, senior services, and disaster-relief efforts continues to make a difference in communities worldwide.
Programs such as Pathway of Hope provide case-managed support to help families overcome poverty and achieve self-sufficiency. Adult Rehabilitation Centers offer emotional, spiritual, and social recovery programs for men and women facing addiction. The organization also plays a crucial role in disaster response and offers specialized support to military veterans through advocacy, education, and housing assistance.
As the holiday season approaches, the Salvation Army is calling for community volunteers to help make Christmas brighter for local families. Volunteer opportunities include:
Kettle Bell Ringers: Volunteers are needed from November 14 through December 24 (Monday through Saturday) to ring the iconic red kettle bells at local locations, including Publix, Walmart, Hobby Lobby, Sam’s Club, and Detwiler’s. The goal this season is to raise $300,000 in donations.
Angel Tree Volunteers: Helpers are needed to set up the Angel Tree Toy Shop (Nov. 20–26), sort gifts (Dec. 1–18), and assist on Distribution Day (Dec. 19). Shifts are available 9 a.m.–12 p.m. and 1 p.m.–4 p.m., with extended hours on distribution day.
These opportunities are open to individuals, families, and community groups looking to give back. Interested volunteers can call 941-757-5770 or email felicia.mcdermott@uss.salvationarmy.org for more information.
The Salvation Army continues to rely on local generosity—through volunteerism, donations, and sponsorships—to “do the most good” for those in need in Manatee County. For more information about local programs and ways to contribute, please visit bradenton.salvationarmyflorida.org.
