Sarasota Paradise Debuts in USL League One as Record Crowd Braves Rain for Historic Home Opener
A new chapter in Gulf Coast soccer began Saturday night as Sarasota Paradise played the first professional match in club history, officially launching its inaugural season in USL League One at Premier Sports Campus at Lakewood Ranch.
Despite challenging weather conditions and a lengthy rain delay, thousands of supporters turned out to witness the milestone event. The evening drew a record crowd of 2,791 fans, the largest attendance in Sarasota Paradise history, as the region’s growing soccer community gathered to celebrate the club’s professional debut.
The match itself was a tightly contested defensive battle that remained scoreless through the first half and deep into the second. Boise eventually broke the stalemate in the 73rd minute when Denys Kostyshyn scored the lone goal of the match, securing a 1-0 victory in the historic opener.
Boise threatened early, generating the first chance just five minutes into the game when Blake Bodily delivered a cross into the box that was stopped by Paradise goalkeeper Alex Sutton. Sarasota worked to build offensive pressure throughout the match, but repeatedly found their attacks turned away by Boise’s defensive line and goalkeeper Joseph Andema.
Sarasota appeared to score what would have been the club’s first professional goal in the 31st minute when Ethan Bryant delivered a corner kick that was headed into the net by defender Jørgen Pettersen. The celebration was short-lived as the goal was ruled offside, drawing disappointment from the home crowd.
After Boise took the lead in the second half, Sarasota pushed forward aggressively during the final minutes of the match, earning several corner kicks and creating late scoring opportunities. However, Andema held firm in goal, preserving the shutout and securing the victory for the visitors.
Although the result was not the outcome Sarasota hoped for, the evening marked a significant milestone for the club and highlighted the strong community support behind the new professional franchise. Many fans remained through nearly two hours of weather delays and continued to fill the stadium with energy throughout the match.
Club leadership acknowledged that the opening night also provided valuable lessons. Weather delays caused extended waits for fans before gates opened and pushed the kickoff back by approximately 90 minutes. Feedback from attendees following the match prompted several immediate operational changes, including replacing the stadium’s security company, improving concession service and availability, expanding communication during delays, increasing stadium staff for guest assistance, and adding additional facilities in parking areas for future events.
Despite the setbacks, the historic night underscored the growing enthusiasm for professional soccer in Sarasota and Manatee counties, with supporters lining up around the stadium even as storms passed through the area.
Sarasota Paradise will remain at home for its next match, hosting Fort Wayne FC at Premier Sports Campus as the club continues its first season in USL League One. Tickets for the upcoming game are available through the club’s website.
