School Board Terminates Superintendent Dr. Wysong; Appoints Kevin Chapman as Interim Leader
Headline:
In a decisive move following nearly four hours of discussion, the School Board voted Tuesday morning to terminate Superintendent Dr. Jason Wysong without cause. The motion passed 3-2, with Board Members Choate, Spray, and Kennedy voting in favor of termination. Board Members Tatem and Felton opposed the decision.
Shortly after the vote, the board unanimously approved a motion authorizing Board Chair Choate and the board attorney to negotiate amended contract terms and a severance package with Dr. Wysong’s legal counsel.
Following a brief recess, the board reconvened at 1 p.m. to consider candidates for interim superintendent. Board Member Choate recommended Deputy Superintendent Kevin Chapman, while Felton and Tatem supported former Superintendent Dr. Bill Vogel. Kennedy also suggested Dr. Vogel; however, Spray opposed Vogel’s potential appointment, citing health concerns.
Despite his name being considered, Dr. Vogel was not present at the meeting. Later, Attorney Bill Dye informed the board that Dr. Vogel did not wish to be considered for the interim position.
Spray moved to appoint Kevin Chapman to the role, seconded by Choate. The motion passed unanimously, 5-0.
Chapman will serve in the interim role while the board begins its search for a permanent superintendent. Board members clarified that suggestions for the interim position were not to be considered for the long-term role.
The school district now enters a transitional phase as it begins planning the search for its next permanent superintendent.
