Search for Missing Boater Suspended After Extensive Efforts
The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended the search for 69-year-old Russell Trudeau, a recreational boater who was reported missing after his vessel was found adrift near Piney Point. Trudeau departed from the Palmetto area on Sunday in his 17-foot boat and did not return as expected. His unmanned vessel was discovered on Monday, prompting a comprehensive search operation.
The search encompassed approximately 180 square miles and involved multiple agencies, including the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Eckerd College Search and Rescue, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office, the Holmes Beach Police Department, and Manatee North River Fire Rescue. The Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater also deployed a helicopter to aid search efforts. Despite these extensive measures, Trudeau remains unaccounted for, leading to the suspension of active search operations pending new information.
The Palmetto Police Department continues to conduct land-based searches in the vicinity where Trudeau's boat was found. Authorities urge anyone with information regarding his whereabouts to contact the Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg at 866-881-1392.
