Sheriff Wells Highlights Rise in Scams at Advisory Board Luncheon
Rick Wells hosted his Advisory Board Luncheon on Monday at the Bradenton Country Club, where members received an in-depth update on the growing threat of scams and financial fraud targeting local residents.
Sgt. Jason Farrier and Det. Randall Walker of the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office Economic Crimes Unit addressed the board about trends they are seeing across Manatee County, particularly schemes that prey on elderly and vulnerable individuals. The presentation focused on common tactics used by scammers, warning signs to watch for, and the importance of proactive conversations with family members about protecting personal finances.
Investigators cautioned residents to be wary of unexpected text messages, phone calls, or letters requesting payment or personal and financial information. They emphasized that scammers frequently create a sense of urgency, pressuring victims to act immediately to avoid supposed legal trouble, account closures, or other negative consequences.
Officials also warned against paying by check or mailing checks, noting that they can be intercepted, altered, or copied, and that banking information may later be sold to other criminals.
Another common tactic discussed was caller ID spoofing, in which scammers manipulate phone displays to make calls appear to come from legitimate businesses or government agencies. Residents were encouraged to hang up and contact organizations directly using verified phone numbers if they are unsure about the legitimacy of a call.
Law enforcement leaders reminded attendees that deputies and other officers will never request payment to resolve a warrant or prevent an arrest. Detectives also described how criminals use unsuspecting individuals as money mules by sending unexpected funds and asking victims to return a portion, effectively laundering stolen money.
With increased access to public records and advancements in technology, scammers often use accurate personal details to make their requests appear credible. Investigators urged residents to remain cautious even when callers seem to have legitimate information.
