Sheriff’s Office Deploys 500 New AEDs to Enhance Lifesaving Response Countywide
The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office is upgrading its emergency response capabilities by deploying 500 new automated external defibrillators, marking a significant enhancement to the tools available to deputies during cardiac emergencies. The devices will be installed in patrol vehicles and throughout the sheriff’s office facilities across the county.
Deputy Josh Escher, the agency’s law enforcement training coordinator, said the new technology arrives as the previous generation of AEDs reaches the end of its lifespan. After evaluating several models, the agency selected a high-performance unit capable of delivering a shock significantly faster than the older devices.
The updated AEDs feature advanced cellular technology that performs daily, weekly, and monthly operational checks. These automated diagnostics reduce the burden on deputies, who previously had to manually verify battery levels, pads, and system readiness. Escher said the remote monitoring gives deputies confidence that a device will be fully functional during emergencies.
Training for deputies took place last week, and the department expects to complete distribution of the new units by the end of January. Civilian personnel will also be included in the training process.
For Deputy Jared Leggett, who was named MCSO’s Deputy of the Year in 2023, the importance of AED access is deeply personal. In 2022, while completing paperwork on Anna Maria Island, his sergeant collapsed from a severe heart attack known as a “widow maker.” With an AED close at hand, Leggett administered CPR and delivered a shock that revived his colleague.
Leggett said immediate access to the device made the difference that day and encourages community members to learn CPR and become familiar with AED use. He emphasized that emergencies can happen without warning and that bystander action can save lives.
With the deployment of the new devices, the Sheriff’s Office aims to strengthen emergency readiness and expand lifesaving capabilities across Manatee County.
