More than 150 military veterans returned to a hero’s welcome Tuesday evening at Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) following a Southwest Florida Honor Flight trip to Washington, D.C., where they visited memorials honoring their military service.
Thousands of family members, friends, community supporters and local agencies gathered at the airport to celebrate the veterans’ return. The homecoming marked only the second Honor Flight arrival in Sarasota in the organization’s nearly 20-year history.
Southwest Florida Honor Flight serves veterans across seven counties, providing free trips to the nation’s capital to visit military memorials and recognize their service and sacrifices. Tuesday’s participants included veterans from Bradenton, Sarasota, Venice, Englewood and surrounding communities who served during World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War and other military conflicts.
Among the participants was retired Marine Col. Jim Leslie, 85, a decorated Vietnam veteran who served 30 years in the military. Leslie received three Purple Hearts after arriving at Khe Sanh in 1967 and later served in Grenada, Panama and Operation Desert Storm. Despite his military honors, Leslie considers bringing all 105 Marines under his command home alive among his greatest accomplishments.
The trip marked Leslie’s first opportunity to visit the nation’s war memorials and his first return to Washington, D.C., in more than two decades.
For many veterans, particularly those who returned from Vietnam without public recognition, the airport celebration provided a long-awaited expression of gratitude.
Veteran Air sponsored the Honor Flight, with additional trips planned through airports across the Tampa Bay region.
Southwest Florida Honor Flight continues accepting applications from veterans who wish to participate in future trips. Veterans from all branches and eras of military service are eligible to apply.
Tuesday’s homecoming highlighted the community’s continued commitment to honoring those who served and ensuring their sacrifices are remembered.
