Special Olympics Florida Brings 1,700 Athletes to IMG Academy for Regional Summer Games
BRADENTON, FL—On Sunday, the spirit of unity, competition, and celebration filled the air at IMG Academy as 1,700 athletes from 11 counties gathered to compete in the Special Olympics Florida West Coast Regional Summer Games.
The event showcased the determination and talent of athletes who participated in seven different sports, including basketball, bocce, tennis, and cheerleading. The games began with an inspiring opening ceremony that energized the crowd and set the tone for a day of meaningful competition.
Athletes, many of whom had trained for months in their local counties, took to the courts and fields across IMG Academy’s expansive campus, ready to compete at one of the most anticipated events in the region. Top performers from the games will have the opportunity to advance to the state-level competition in May at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando.
More than 600 volunteers supported the event, assisting in every aspect of the day’s operations. All Special Olympics Florida coaches also volunteer their time, giving back through their dedication to inclusion and personal growth for every athlete.
Athletes demonstrated skill and sportsmanship and inspired the crowd with their teamwork and perseverance. The event was a powerful reminder of the strength of community and the joy that inclusive sports can bring.
Special Olympics Florida continues to seek volunteer coaches and support from those looking to make a difference.
