SRQ Plans New Parking Garage as Passenger Growth Strains Existing Lots
Officials at Sarasota Bradenton International Airport are moving forward with plans to expand parking capacity as continued passenger growth places increased demand on existing facilities.
Airport leaders report that annual passenger traffic has more than tripled since 2018, surpassing 4 million travelers. The increase has led to frequent full conditions in long-term parking lots, particularly on peak travel days such as Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
To address immediate needs, the airport has designated 60 additional parking spaces for rental car operations to improve overall traffic flow and availability for travelers. Overflow lots are also used when primary parking areas reach capacity.
Longer-term, airport officials are planning a new multimodal complex that will include a structured parking garage. The proposed facility would place rental car companies on the ground level, with upper floors dedicated to public parking. The design calls for shaded parking spaces located near the terminal to enhance passenger convenience.
The project is currently in the design phase, expected to take approximately 1 year. Construction would begin after design plans are finalized and approved. Airport officials have not provided a specific construction timeline.
In the interim, travelers are advised to arrive at least two hours before scheduled departures on high-volume travel days to allow time for parking and shuttle transportation to the terminal.
Airport officials say the planned expansion is intended to accommodate sustained growth while improving the overall travel experience for passengers.
