Tampa Bay Lightning Honors Steve and Carolyn Roskamp for Community Impact
The Tampa Bay Lightning recently recognized Steve and Carolyn Roskamp as Community Heroes during a game against the Ottawa Senators, celebrating their dedication to early childhood education through the Soar in 4 program. As part of the honor, the Roskamps received a $50,000 donation from the Lightning Foundation and the Lightning Community Hero program, which they have pledged to the Manatee Education Foundation (MEF).
The Roskamps founded Soar in 4 in collaboration with the School District of Manatee County to enhance early literacy development among young learners. Over the past decade, the initiative has expanded to support 17 elementary schools and numerous daycare centers while also hosting free monthly literacy events at The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature.
The program has earned national recognition, winning two major awards for its impact in advancing early learning. Through Soar in 4, thousands of children across Manatee County have gained access to books and other educational resources, fostering a strong foundation before they enter the classroom.
The $50,000 grant will fund Soar Lab exhibits, featuring interactive learning areas focused on storytelling, tinkering, art, block play, and outdoor exploration. These hands-on spaces are designed to align with Florida’s Early Learning Standards while providing sensory-friendly literacy opportunities for over 2,000 children.
In celebration of the recognition, the Roskamps invited MEF Executive Director Mary Glass and members of the School District leadership to the Lightning game.
