Teen Suspect in Volusia County Double Homicide Arrested in Ellenton
A 17-year-old suspect wanted in connection with a double homicide in Volusia County has been arrested in Ellenton, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
The teenager was taken into custody early Wednesday and is facing two counts of second-degree murder in the July 29 shooting deaths of 18-year-old Samson Campbell and 19-year-old Dustin Rose in DeLand. Because the suspect is a juvenile, authorities have not released his identity.
According to the DeLand Police Department, Campbell and Rose were childhood friends. Campbell had recently moved to Chicago, while Rose was a cadet at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, and served in the South Carolina Army National Guard.
Police said the two young men were found with multiple gunshot wounds last Wednesday evening at an industrial property on West New York Avenue in DeLand. One of the victims’ mothers reportedly discovered the injured men and called 911. Both victims died from their injuries.
DeLand Police Chief Jason Umberger described the case as a tragedy and said investigators remain committed to determining what led to the shootings.
Following the deaths, U.S. Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina expressed condolences to the families of both victims, noting Rose’s service as a Citadel cadet and National Guard member while also recognizing the loss suffered by Campbell’s family.
An arrest warrant for the juvenile suspect was issued on Tuesday. The U.S. Marshals Service located and arrested the suspect in Ellenton on Wednesday morning. The investigation remains ongoing.
