Tom Bennett Park Adds Splash Pad and Communication Board, Expanding ADA Accessibility
Exciting progress is underway at Tom Bennett Park, where Manatee County has poured and leveled the concrete foundation for a new splash pad and is installing the county’s first-ever Communication Board. These upgrades signal a significant step forward in making the park more inclusive and accessible for all families.
The new Communication Board will be located near the splash pad and serves as a vital resource for individuals with speech, language, and communication challenges. Featuring colorful symbols and images, the board enables users to express their needs, emotions, and choices in a non-verbal manner, promoting engagement and independence in a public setting. This addition is a key component of the county’s efforts to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and promote universal access across its park system.
These improvements complement the existing Kiwanis Playground at Tom Bennett Park, a fully inclusive play space designed in partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Bradenton. Opened in 2024, the Kiwanis Playground features ADA-compliant equipment, rubberized surfacing, and accessible pathways, allowing children of all abilities to play side by side. It stands as a shining example of community collaboration and a commitment to equity in recreational access.
Together, the Kiwanis Playground, new splash pad, and Communication Board demonstrate a thoughtful and ongoing effort to transform Tom Bennett Park into a model of inclusion. Located off State Road 64 just east of I-75, the 200-acre park was dedicated in 2005 and named for former Manatee County Commissioner Tom Bennett. It offers a variety of amenities, including nature trails, picnic areas, a canoe/kayak launch, and scenic views along the Braden River.
With these newest additions, Manatee County continues to set the standard for creating public spaces that are welcoming, engaging, and accessible to everyone.
