Trial Set for Man Accused of Crashing Into Bradenton Nursing Home, Shooting at Deputies
A man accused of driving his car into a Bradenton nursing home and opening fire on deputies is scheduled to stand trial on April 20.
Prosecutors allege that Sean Calcutty rammed his Honda Civic into the entrance of Aspire at Palma Sola Bay in May 2024 in an effort to gain access to the building.
According to court records, a nurse inside the facility heard the crash and went to investigate, finding Calcutty inside loading a magazine into a handgun. The nurse alerted others in the building, including a second individual who confronted Calcutty and told him to leave. Authorities say Calcutty pointed a loaded firearm at that person and pulled the trigger, but the weapon only produced a clicking sound and no one was struck.
When deputies arrived, they found the front doors of the nursing home smashed from the impact of the vehicle. Investigators report that Calcutty refused to comply with commands and began firing, striking one deputy in the arm. Law enforcement officers were able to subdue him at the scene and take him into custody.
Following months of legal proceedings in which Calcutty sought to challenge his competency, a judge ultimately ruled that he is competent to stand trial.
Calcutty faces multiple felony charges, including two counts of attempted first-degree murder, one involving a law enforcement officer, as well as aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and armed burglary.
