Unborn Child Killed in Head-On Crash Involving Suspected DUI Driver on DeSoto Bridge
A tragic head-on collision early Sunday morning on the DeSoto Bridge has claimed the life of an unborn child and left the mother critically injured. Authorities say the crash occurred around 4:30 a.m. when a GMC SUV traveling southbound in the northbound lanes collided with a sedan.
The driver of the SUV, identified as 31-year-old Laurentino Serrano-Juarez of Bradenton, was allegedly under the influence and did not have a valid driver’s license at the time of the crash. The sedan was driven by a 28-year-old woman from St. Petersburg, who was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Despite emergency efforts, her unborn baby did not survive the impact.
Serrano-Juarez was also taken to the hospital for treatment and was later released into police custody. He now faces multiple charges, including DUI manslaughter, DUI with serious bodily injury, DUI property damage, and driving without a valid license.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to piece together the full circumstances of the crash.
