United Way Suncoast to Host Real Talk on Education Webinar Focused on Gender Divide
United Way Suncoast is set to host a virtual discussion on Tuesday, May 12, at 10 a.m., addressing the growing divide between boys and girls in education, an issue organizers say is reaching critical levels nationwide.
The event, titled Real Talk on Education: Bridging the Gender Divide, will bring together a panel of regional and national experts to explore the academic disengagement of boys and the broader societal implications tied to the trend. The conversation will also emphasize that increasing support for boys does not come at the expense of girls’ continued success.
Panelists include Courtney Robinson of 10 Tampa Bay, Ioakim Boutakidis, a fellow with the American Institute for Boys and Men, Kim Jowell, CEO of the Pinellas Education Foundation, Thomas Williams, director of PLANit Sarasota, Sheila Halpin, director of early learning for the School District of Manatee County, and Freddy Williams, CEO of the Boys & Girls Club.
The discussion will examine how longstanding attitudes toward boys’ behavior in classrooms may no longer be effective, while also addressing the need for more male educators and individualized approaches to learning. Organizers say the conversation will cover challenges across the entire education system, from early learning through higher education.
Data continues to show a widening gap, with girls outperforming boys academically and significantly outnumbering them in college enrollment and degree completion. At the same time, a growing number of young men between the ages of 16 and 24 are disconnected from both education and the workforce, raising concerns about long-term economic and social impacts.
The webinar aims to provide a balanced and solutions-focused dialogue, bringing attention to the complexities of the issue while reinforcing the importance of ensuring success for all students.
Registration is available online for those interested in attending the virtual event.
