USF SBDC Shares Disaster Recovery Support with Manatee COAD as Small Businesses Prepare for Hurricane Season
The Florida Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at the University of South Florida Muma College of Business is continuing its mission to help entrepreneurs and small businesses launch, grow, and recover through a robust range of services offered across the region. With more than 40 centers and 50 outreach locations in nine regions—including strong representation in Manatee and Sarasota counties—the SBDC is a critical lifeline for businesses before, during, and after crises.
On June 23, 2025, Associate Director Stacey Dadd of the Florida SBDC at the University of South Florida addressed members of the Manatee County Community Organizations Active in Disaster (COAD). COAD is a coalition of nonprofits, government agencies, faith-based groups, and business representatives working together to strengthen disaster preparedness, response, and recovery coordination throughout the community. The group fosters collaboration among stakeholders to ensure that Manatee County is resilient in the face of emergencies.
During the meeting, Dadd outlined the SBDC’s disaster preparedness and recovery services, emphasizing the importance of business continuity planning. She highlighted that 40% of small businesses that close after a disaster never reopen, making proactive planning and post-disaster support essential. The SBDC offers assistance with creating continuity plans, pivoting business models, and applying for financial relief such as Florida’s Emergency Bridge Loan and SBA disaster loans.
The SBDC’s consulting services—offered at no cost—also cover capital access, digital marketing, market growth, cybersecurity, and government contracting. These resources are part of the SBDC’s broader mission to help small businesses thrive across Florida.
For business owners in Manatee and surrounding counties seeking to enhance their disaster preparedness or drive growth, the Florida SBDC at USF remains a trusted partner. More information is available at SBDCTampaBay.com.
