USF Student From Bradenton Killed in Wrong-Way DUI Crash on I-75, Family Honors Her Legacy With #LoveLikeLauryn
A 21-year-old University of South Florida student from Bradenton was killed early last Sunday in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 75 in Charlotte County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Investigators said Lauryn Akey was driving home from a wedding when a pickup truck traveling the wrong direction on I-75 struck her vehicle. Authorities identified the driver of the truck as Dennis Lee Olson, 53, of Lehigh Acres.
Troopers said Olson was driving a Ford F-150 while impaired and made a U-turn into oncoming traffic before colliding with Akey’s vehicle and another car. Test results reportedly showed Olson’s blood alcohol level was .222, nearly three times the legal limit in Florida.
Olson was arrested and is being held without bond in Charlotte County on charges including DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide. Officials said he also has a prior impaired driving conviction from Minnesota.
The crash also seriously injured a woman and two children from Arcadia who were traveling in a separate vehicle. One of the children reportedly required surgery. Prosecutors indicated additional charges could still be filed as the investigation continues.
Akey’s death has sparked an outpouring of grief and remembrance across social media, where friends and family have shared memories using the hashtag #LoveLikeLauryn.
Family members described Akey as compassionate, joyful and someone who brought people together. She was preparing to graduate from USF next year and planned to pursue a career in nursing.
Loved ones said she enjoyed spending time with family and friends, fishing, attending concerts and supporting the USF Bulls.
In the hours before the crash, Akey reportedly texted her family after stopping for gas to let them know she loved them.
Her family is now encouraging others to carry forward the kindness and positivity she shared with those around her, hoping her legacy will continue to inspire others through the growing #LoveLikeLauryn movement.
